Politicians find new ways to use the media

Politicians are no strangers to the media. For many years I've seen their commercials where they stand proudly with their families in front of an American flag expressing their views and making promises.

Senator Scott Brown has taken using the media to the next level with social media. According to Wikipedia social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.

Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content"[1].

Social media outreach increased Brown’s name recognition among likely voters, according to the study. In November 2009, 51 percent had heard of Brown; by January 2010 his name recognition was up to 95 percent.

I think that we should all be on the lookout for more politicians in the future using this form of social media.

Bias in the Media

Losing the Pro-Abortion Media Bias by Cliff Kincaid

On the surface it seems that this article is about abortion related news being broadcast in a biased way. Cliff Kincaid who is the writer of this article talks about a former NY times reporter(Alex S. Jones) who has written a book entitled "Losing the News." In it Jones talks about how other reporters and news stations reports abortion related information the news in a bias way. When it comes to abortion Jones is pro choice but admits that, "Reporters as a group tend to be pro-choice, and pro-life advocates have long complained that these biases have skewed the way the story is reported." In the book, Jones gives vivid examples and name names.

Although this article mainly focuses on abortion related topics if one were to peel back a few layers you would see that..."Houston we have a bigger problem." A lot of people may read this story and only think that abortion related stories are being reported in a bias manner. However, the more important issue in my mind is if the news has the power to alter such a serious issue such as abortion, what other important issues are being reported in this same manner?
