Bias in the Media

Losing the Pro-Abortion Media Bias by Cliff Kincaid

On the surface it seems that this article is about abortion related news being broadcast in a biased way. Cliff Kincaid who is the writer of this article talks about a former NY times reporter(Alex S. Jones) who has written a book entitled "Losing the News." In it Jones talks about how other reporters and news stations reports abortion related information the news in a bias way. When it comes to abortion Jones is pro choice but admits that, "Reporters as a group tend to be pro-choice, and pro-life advocates have long complained that these biases have skewed the way the story is reported." In the book, Jones gives vivid examples and name names.

Although this article mainly focuses on abortion related topics if one were to peel back a few layers you would see that..."Houston we have a bigger problem." A lot of people may read this story and only think that abortion related stories are being reported in a bias manner. However, the more important issue in my mind is if the news has the power to alter such a serious issue such as abortion, what other important issues are being reported in this same manner?

  1. Though reporters might cover stories in a bias way, I would hope to think it would not change the opinion of those who feel strongly about a certain subject like abortion.

No matter how a newspaper or a reporter might claim to not be bias I do think its a easier said then done. However a person might write a story their personal views and ideas might slip into their report. As the article changes hands and goes through the line of command I think others views and ideas will be add to the mix as well.

Making it hard to keep a article completely unbiased in anyway.

  2. This is why it is of utmost importance to gather news from a variety of news sources. That way, you can get all of the different angles (even though news as a whole is supposed to remain objective) and make an informed decision about what you feel is right. No offense to conservatives, but it seems as though conservatives are always belly-aching about liberal media bias, yet the more conservative news networks tend end up being that much more slanted. So much for "fair and balanced"...

  3. How can a reporter give false information? If you are a reporter who is reporting straight news how do you even make it biased without changing the facts.

However when it is a subject in which opinions are to be gathered it is very important to make sure you have an even number of pros and you do cons.

Abortion has always been a touchy subject and will never be in agreeance with the entire population. Therefore no matter who is reporting or how they do it someone will always complaing about it.

  4. I find it pretty easy to keep my feelings out of articles that I write for The Campus Voice. Maybe I'm plain heartless? I kid. When I did an article on the Somer Thompson scholarship, I was saddened but I didn't really give my article a voice. By that, I mean, it grew it's own voice.

  5. I find myself noticing the way some reporters express their thoughts on abortion. In some of these expressions, I see the reporter trying to persuade the audience to belive in what they are saying. In my opinion, there should be no bias reporting when covering this type of topic. Instead of a reporter expressing their feeling in a bias way, why not educate the audience and that will make it more comfortable instead of being pressured

  6. This is why it is important for reporters to do their job by collecting several different sources from all views. If the reader has strong opinions, feelings on a subject they will stand strong in what they believe.
