A new spin on NBC blockage of the Olympics

A recent review on The Online Journalism Review written by Robert Niles shedded a new light on NBC's poor decision to block out the Olympics.

While everyone else in the world including me shared their negative views on NBC poor decision Niles decided to look at this situation in a different way.

He praised NBC for denying him the choice to watch the Olympics on their network stating that, But by denying me the chance to watch the Olympics live (which are taking place in the same time zone where I live, by the way), NBC's pushed me to search the Web for live video and coverage, allowing me to find lively, even wildly entertaining, streams of coverage that I'd never have found if I'd been able to watch the games live on my TV.

That's an important lesson for all news publishers. If you don't provide the information that your audience wants, in the manner that they want it, people not only will they seek alternatives... but they might find ones that they strongly prefer to yours.

  1. I feel if NBC would let these people watch the Olympics live, there would be a greater amount of people watching the games. Without being able to see them live, many people lean towards the internet.

  2. Despite the fact that it isn't live, many people are flocking to NBC to view the coverage.

Not me. I'm waiting for 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Community to come back after all this crap.

  3. Well apparently, a lot of people were complaining that they were seeing the scores on the Olympics website before the events were being televised, so at least if people are having to go to the internet to watch it, they are more in control of spoilers. I didn't even realize that the Olympics are being blocked, it seems like they're the only thing on.

  4. The one thing about that is there is plenty of people who are not computer suave and there are people who can't get fast Internet connections.

For the people who don't do computers they will continue to watch television. Then the people who can't get high speed Internet where they live are not going to want to watch the clips online. The buffer time for those videos would be way to long to download.

So fortunately for NBC they can continue to get good ratings delaying the olympics.

  5. Im with you Ben, I need a good episode of Office once the drama of the skaters calm down. It's great that somebody has something positive to say about the way that it's being broadcasted. The guy has a thing for adventure and not being so simple and wanting it to come on the box.

  6. I think it is great that there is something positive to be said. I personaly could care less either way. At first I am always into the Olympics but gezz I feel they go on forever. I was mad this year that some of my favorite shows were put on old from airing due to the Olympics.
